I Know Your Works

Good morning!  I want to encourage you today with a word from Revelation.  Revelation is such a wild book; I am sure there is no end to its mysteries this side of heaven.  One of the most enlightening sections is in the beginning, where God writes letters to the angels that are watching or even delivering messages to seven different churches (wild, right?!).  These letters weren’t just for churches back then, but represent types of churches, and types of believers.  Today, I want to look at a portion of God’s letter to the church at Ephesus:

To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: ‘The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands.  I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance

But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.  Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first.  If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. – Revelation 2:1-5

At the start, it seems like the church at Ephesus is doing well.  However, God tells them that they have abandoned the love and the works that they did at first.

When I first started really praying to God and hearing His voice, I was super excited.  It made me want to spend time with Him, read my Bible, and risk telling my friends about Jesus.  Slowly over time, I got discouraged by my own problems, or distracted by other things and interests that took me away from the first love I had with God, and the things and time I was spending with God at the beginning. It wasn’t and isn’t ok.

God instructs the church at Ephesus to repent and return to the things they did at first.  If not, He warns that He is going to take their lampstand.  They will miss out on the light of God, and being a part of what He wants to do on the earth.  Let’s turn our hearts fully towards Him, return to those things we did when we first gave our lives to Jesus, and march forward toward the wonderful things that God has waiting for us!
