Never Stumble

Yesterday I shared a little bit from 2 Peter.  I wanted to continue in the same spot this morning.  In the next part Peter shares with everybody how to be productive in God and NEVER STUMBLE.  The Bible doesn’t play!  Peter continues,

Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in moral excellence, knowledge, and in knowledge, self-control, and in self-control, perseverance, and in perseverance, godliness, and in godliness, brotherly kindness and in brotherly kindness, love.  For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ…for as long as you practice these things, YOU WILL NEVER STUMBLE. – 2 Peter 1:5-11

Amazing!  The first part says that we must apply ‘diligence’.  This means to be conscientious, careful, and hard-working.  That’s how we are supposed to pursue these qualities that Peter is talking about.  In our faith in Jesus we are supposed to add moral excellence.

It’s easy to look at the Bible as a set of rules.  As long as we follow the rules that we are good.  Just find where the line is and then skirt right on up to it.  NOPE.  That’s not moral excellence.  Excellence isn’t about just staying on the right side of the line.  It’s not about passing.  It’s about knocking the ball out of the park.  It’s about being so strong in our standard of behavior that we rise above the crowd.  In pursuit of this excellent moral code, we are to add knowledge.  This means knowledge of God, the Bible, and knowledge of the Holy Spirit and Jesus.  If you are reading this devotional, you probably already are pursuing a knowledge of God.  Keep going!  From there we are to pursue self-control (yikes!), perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and finally, love.  Essays upon essays could be written about each one.  These may seem hard things to work on, but we have a promise from God that as we practice these things, we won’t stumble.  I don’t know about you, but I want it.  Let’s go after each one of these qualities, and let’s get closer to perfection today!
