Poor in Spirit

Good Morning men!  I wanted to focus this morning on a small but powerful portion of the teachings of Jesus, one of the beatitudes.  Jesus declares,

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  –  Matthew 5:3

No one likes to be poor, and as far as I know, only monks find it to be a good thing, yet here Jesus declares that the poor IN SPIRIT are blessed.  So what does it mean to be poor in spirit?

There is a desperation that comes with poverty.  To be spiritually poor is to be desperate for God.  It means God isn’t just a nice-to-have, He is the difference between life and death.  His word is our daily bread.  If we don’t have Him, we won’t make it.  We must ask ourselves, am I desperate for God today?

To be poor means you don’t have a lot.  It mean you don’t have a lot to lose.  Being poor in spirit means that we have an understanding that what we have in this natural life is of little value compared to knowing Jesus.  Someone who is poor in spirit is able to surrender everything to Jesus, because they know that what they have is not enough.  Whatever we are holding on to, we must let it go in order to receive Jesus.  He is the entrance to the kingdom of heaven.  Whatever we have in this world, it doesn’t compare to Him.

I want to encourage all of you, as I speak to my own heart, to let such a desperation and desire for God fill me that I am compelled to do whatever is necessary to see more of Him fulfilled in my life.  I must do whatever must be done, whatever must be surrendered, to hear the voice of God in a powerful way, to see God move in my life in a powerful way, to see the kingdom of heaven pour from me out in the world in a powerful way.

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.  See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting – Psalm 139:23-24

Let’s search for the Lord with everything we have, and follow Him wherever He leads us!
