ROMANS 8:5-11

5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

We have to realize the flesh and the enemy are cohorts on a mission to keep our minds on the things that are contrary to God. And these things bring death. Because the wages of sin is death, so sin can not bring anything else but death. And because you and I are created in the image of God, the enemy hates to see us please God. And because the enemy has come to steal, kill and destroy, he teams up with the flesh trying to steal the blessings God has for us, kill the dreams God puts in us, and destroy the plans God has spoke over us before the foundations of the world was formed. One of the ways he does this is by deceiving us with thoughts that go against the commandments of God, trying to get us walk in a manner that is unworthy of the call. But Paul urges us in Ephesians 4 to walk in a manner that is worthy of the call so we have to make sure our minds are set on things above so that we are not deceived by things on this earth. And the way we set our minds on things above is by staying in His word, staying on our knees in prayer and constantly taking the opportunity to worship God every chance we get. These things edify the spirit, and keep our minds on the things of the spirit and these things bring life.

So often the enemy and my flesh will try and send thoughts of anger my way. You have all heard me joke in church about road rage, and the reality is I am only half joking, this is a real struggle for me. My life is really full and so I am in a hurry all the time, which by the way I am working to try and correct this. However, this is a struggle for me. When I am in the car I am headed somewhere, I am not just driving to drive aimlessly. So when someone gets in front of me that is not in a hurry, my flesh and the enemy tries to use this to get me angry. He will use this to try and get me to say things I shouldn’t say, act in a way I shouldn’t act, and way too many times I fall victim to it. And when I do allow it to make me angry, I will then take it out on those closest to me. My family will take the brunt of my anger, which I am not proud of but it happens. This is sinful and I have to repent and ask for God’s forgiveness and my family’s forgiveness. And this type of stuff keeps our minds on things of the flesh and that is exactly what the enemy and our flesh wants to do to us. But in our passage, Paul encourages us by telling us we are people of the spirit. We have the same spirit living in us that raised Christ from the dead, and this spirit will quicken even our mortal bodies to keep our minds on Christ….we just have to tap into His power.

So Real Men, realize the schemes of the enemy and our flesh, and let’s allow the Spirit of God to lead us and keep our minds on Jesus today.
